I have over 25 years experience in production and camera operation. I took film studies in College and did lots of work experience during my studies. Upon graduating I was lucky enough to find work on commercials to filming events such as weddings and graduation ceremonies.
I remember realising I wanted to go into documentary filmmaking at the age of 12. I used to spend hours making films with my friends using fantasy scripts we'd created. Then one afternoon I ventured out on my own and just filmed people on the street and animals in the zoo and thought to myself, there are so many stories here and amazingly creative ways to tell them.
I didn't however move into documentary filmmaking until the late 1990s because it is a tough sector to break into. After racking up 15 years of experience decided to go freelance.
While freelance has its challenges, I am really pleased I took the leap because it gives me much more creative freedom, in terms of what projects I can accept. I have recently taken on an assistant to help on the growing number of self-shoots I get asked to do and have also started teaching film classes twice a month.
